Reekie Linn
A double fall on the River Isla that merges into a single smoking cascade when the water is high, hidden behind an unremarkable roadside bridge.

About
The story
There is nothing at Bridge of Craigisla to suggest what lies a five-minute walk beyond the little car park. Then the ground opens into a wooded gorge and the River Isla throws itself off two ledges, six metres and eighteen, into a dark pool far below. In spate the drops merge into one twenty-four-metre curtain and the spray rises in a cloud, which is how the fall got its name: reekie, meaning smoking. A viewpoint stands on the canyon rim some forty-five metres above the water, unprotected in places and best treated with respect. Autumn rain and autumn colour arrive together, and the walk is at its most dramatic then.
Our word
Why Hunters selected it
One of Scotland's most dramatic waterfalls hidden a few minutes from a minor Angus road, and far less visited than its scale deserves. A natural feature of real theatre.
