About
The story
Few places distil the drama of northern England like the North York Moors. Great sweeps of heather roll to the horizon, blazing purple in late summer, while sheltered dales cradle honey-stone villages, ancient abbeys and drystone walls. Steam whistles drift up from the valleys, and paths lead to windblown crosses and secret packhorse bridges. It is a landscape for long boots-on walks, slow drives between hamlets and quiet mornings when the mist lifts off the tops. Vast, atmospheric and deeply rewarding, it rewards those who linger rather than merely pass through.
Our word
Why Hunters selected it
An unmistakably memorable stretch of wild British countryside that anyone would happily travel for and talk about afterwards. Though world-famous rather than hidden, its scenic villages and open moor comfortably clear the Hunters Standard.
