About
The story
Three generations of the Kirkham family have made cheese at Beesley Farm, and they are now the last makers of raw-milk farmhouse Lancashire cheese in the world. Milk from their own herd goes through the slow three-day curd method to produce what the family call a buttery crumble — a cheese beloved of chefs and cheesemongers across Britain, made much as Ruth Kirkham first made it in 1978. The small farm shop, open every day and looking out towards Beacon Fell, sells whole truckles in peak condition alongside artisan bread, pies and guest cheeses from other British farms. Bowland's quiet lanes hide one of British food's great strongholds.
