About
The story
There has been a woolmill in this fold of the Spey valley since the 1780s, and remarkably it is still running. Restored after years of decline and Category A listed, Knockando works its original machinery — carding engines, spinning mules and an 1899 Dobcross loom that fills the shed with a rhythmic clatter when it runs. A guided tour walks you through the whole journey from raw fleece to finished tweed, past three close-up viewing points, with a film in which weavers who have spent decades here explain what their hands are doing. Blankets and scarves woven on site are sold in the shop, and there is coffee and something warm at the end.
