About

The story

An easy half-mile from Bowlees, a path follows the beck up through wooded banks to where Summerhill Force pours over a lip of rock into a mossy amphitheatre — and behind the falling water opens Gibson's Cave, an overhang deep enough to stand inside and watch the fall from behind. The name remembers William Gibson, a sixteenth-century outlaw who sheltered here while Teesdale folk quietly left him food. Dippers and grey wagtails work the stream, and orchids grow in the old quarry nearby. While the crowds head for High Force a mile away, this gentler, stranger waterfall keeps its secret remarkably well.

Our word

Why Hunters selected it

A walk-behind waterfall with its own outlaw legend, minutes from Teesdale's famous falls yet visited by a fraction of their crowds — a textbook lesser-known alternative.
