About
The story
There is no car park at the gates, and that is precisely the point. To reach Dunstanburgh you walk from the fishing village of Craster, the sea on one side and cropped pasture on the other, until the great skeletal gatehouse rises against the sky. Once the mightiest castle in the North, it now stands beautifully undone — jackdaws wheeling through empty windows, waves booming below the cliffs. Turner painted it; walkers never forget it. Come in a stiff wind and you'll understand why this ruin haunts everyone who makes the pilgrimage across the headland.
Our word
Why Hunters selected it
Among a coast crowded with famous fortresses, Dunstanburgh earns its place through the journey itself — the earned, windblown approach makes it a memory rather than a stop, and everyone tells a friend afterwards.
