About
The story
The Howgills are the fells everyone sees from the M6 and almost no one climbs, which is how England's highest cascade waterfall stays so quiet. From the roadside near the Cross Keys — a four-hundred-year-old National Trust temperance inn that still serves no alcohol but excellent teas — a grassy path runs up the valley to where Cautley Spout tumbles nearly two hundred metres in broken white steps down the cliffs below The Calf. There are no crowds, no car parks with machines, no cafés at the top; just fell ponies, the roar of water and the great smooth-shouldered hills. As wild a half-day as northern England offers.
