About
The story
The Ardkinglas estate has been planting on this damp, sheltered shore of Loch Fyne since the nineteenth century, and the results are now measured in records: the tallest tree in Scotland, a grand fir, and a European silver fir with a girth approaching ten metres that is reckoned the mightiest conifer on the continent. Beneath them run one of Britain's finest collections of rhododendrons, at their most extravagant in May. Paths climb through the Gruffalo trail and past a small gorge, and the garden is open every day of the year from dawn until dusk for a modest honesty-box fee. Standing beneath the champions is a genuinely humbling few minutes.
